Made from the original Russell Bird Shooter patterns, the Backcountry's lineage is that of the most accomplished boot in American history. Wiley Post became the first person to fly to the stratosphere in a pair and Earl Shaffer wore his for over 2000 miles, becoming the first man to complete the Appalachian Trail. Both of these pairs are now housed by the Smithsonian Museum.
Lightweight, highly water resistant, and extremely durable, the Backcountry is the boot we recommend as a customer's first pair. If you want a pair of Russells that can be worn from sea to summit in incredible comfort, the Backcountry is your boot.
The differences between the leathers and soles we offer can help tailor the boot to your style or environment. If you would like to learn more about the specifics of these materials and their applications, follow these links:
The Backcountry is made with our famous Double Vamp Moccasin construction. You can learn more about this unique two-layer moccasin construction on our Process page. The Backcountry is 7" tall with Army Studs and a pull loop.

These boots were comfortable out of the box. The workmanship is impeccable and the materials first quality. I’ve worn a lot of boots in my time on earth and none compare to these in comfort and quality. I’m happy and so are my feet.
Had my foot measured and ordered my recommended size. Upon arrival the size was right but I guess the shape was just wrong for me. They felt comfortable after doing a few laps around the house and I bought them for an AT through hike so I took them out for a short 2 mile walk as a test run. Came back with blisters on both heels. After reaching out to the company I was told I couldn't return or exchange the item because I had worn it outside my home. Not an unreasonable policy at face value but now I have an $800 pair of boots I can't wear because they give me blisters. So thanks for nothing I guess.
Great product. Great service. I will remain a repeat customer.
My new Backcountry boots fit great thanks to the on-line sizing app. I bought a smaller size than I normally do and they fit perfectly. The boots are beautiful and I am proud to wear them.
