The Boot
Made from the original Russell Bird Shooter patterns, the Backcountry's lineage is that of the most accomplished boot in American history. Wiley Post became the first person to fly to the stratosphere in a pair and Earl Shaffer wore his for over 2000 miles, becoming the first man to complete the Appalachian Trail. Both of these pairs are now housed by the Smithsonian Museum.
Lightweight, highly water resistant, and extremely durable, the Backcountry is the boot we recommend as a customer's first pair. If you want a pair of Russells that can be worn from sea to summit in incredible comfort, the Backcountry is your boot.
The Leather
Made from water-resistant, full-grain Walnut Timberjack leather, The Backcountry will take you on any adventure in the field. Over time it will patina and darken to a beautiful deep brown. Condition with Obenaufs or Pecards.
The Construction
The Backcountry is made with our famous Double Vamp Moccasin construction. You can learn more about this unique two-layer moccasin construction on our Process page. The Backcountry is 7" tall with Army Studs and a pull loop.
The Sole
The Vibram Roccia is a classic outsole we have been using since the mid 1900s. The long wearing compound, semi-aggressive tread, and durability make it a great all purpose sole. Well suited to backpacking and hunting in rough conditions, it is also low-profile enough for daily wear.
