Russell Moccasin

MODEL DETAILS

The tale behind the South 40 was written in the pheasant fields of South Dakota in 1983-1984. Our team realized the need for a boot that could hold up to a broad variety of conditions and tackle long miles with comfort, all in the lightweight package the Russell Bird Shooter model is known for. Introduced in 1984, the Russell South 40 Bird Shooter was an instant success and continues to be the best in class 40 years later.

RUSSELL CEO LUKE KOLBIE TALKS THROUGH THE FEATURES AND APPLICATION OF OUR TRIPLE VAMP BOOTS

Exclusively at Russell Moccasin

Triple Vamp Construction

3) Inner Vamp

Our unique sock-like liner that seals the interior of our performance footwear. This true moccasin layer is hand-lasted and makes the boot incredibly water-resistant and comfortable.

1) Outer Vamp

This is the primary moccasin layer that forms the core of all our footwear. Hand lasted from the bottom-up, it wraps all the way underneath the foot for the ultimate flexibility and comfort.

4) Molded Sole

In the early days the Molded Sole was the actual sole of the boot. Today it is used primarily like a heel counter for the whole foot, making the boot incredibly stable in mountainous terrain. It is also a true-moccasin layer.

2) Overlap Seam

Patented in 1910 at Russell, the Overlap seam protects the joint between the vamp and plug. Hand sewn for nearly two hours per pair, it is highly water-resistant and differentiates Russells from Maine Moccasins.

Best boot you will ever own!

I purchased my South 40 Bird Shooters about 20 years ago, I just sent them in to be resoled, and I will have them on for another 10-15 years before I replace the soles again...these are boots that last that long! i remember telling my girlfirend at the time, they are totally worth the investment, well she is now my wife and totally agrees! 20+ years later!

Love my South 40s

I purchased my first pair of these in the late nineties. They have been worn hard for at least twenty five hunting seasons. I added a second pair into the rotation this year, fundamentally the same boot as the first pair. Now I can rotate them, and am never without a pair when needed. If you need a do it all upland game boot, look no further than the South 40. I've worn them in every condition, from standing water in the NJ Pine Barrens, to the rock covered mountains of Vermont, to the desert of South Texas. Everything else may be hurting at the end of a hard day, but not my feet.

Great Day!

My first day afield wearing my new South 40s was memorable. My best upland game day ever. My hunting partner, Lady Mackenzie, a Gordon Setter affectionately known as Kenzie, put up a dozen pheasant. My step counter registered 4+ miles of walking through varied terrain. The South 40s ate it up without a complaint and I expect that they'll only get better as they get fully broken in. After several years of mulling them over, I finally made the purchase and I'm glad I did. So far, they are everything that I imagined. Great boots, spectacular dog and a truly beautiful 55 deg late December day in southwestern Pennsylvania. It doesn't get any better than that. Thank you!

Premium Build South Forty

I have a custom pair of these boots with a boar hide toe cap, D rings instead of studs and wear them for hundreds of miles of walking each hunting season.
I believe they are approaching their 20th season and only on the 2nd pair of soles. The leather looks nearly new and they are more comfortable and as waterproof as any other boots (gortex) I have owned.
I had the pleasure of visiting the facility in Berlin were the owner himself measured my feet for the build.

Third Pair South 40

This is my sixth pair of Russell boots and my third pair of South 40. My first pair bought in 2004 were ordered with all the features now called South 40. They have been resoled 9 times and the have been a million miles. Thank you for continuing the quality of workmanship that has always been Russell.
