The Bird Shooter model has been a constant at Russell in it's many variations since the early 1930's. The South 40 Bird Shooter was introduced in 1984 after much testing in the pheasant fields of South Dakota. Nearly every trick in the Russell book is applied to the South 40, making it the ultimate expression of the Bird Shooter model.
The South 40 is a Double Vamp with a Molded Sole construction, commonly referred to as Triple Vamp, which is the most water resistant and durable construction we offer. Made from our classic WeatherTuff Leather, it also boasts a fully leather-lined upper, and quick lacing studs.
To make long days in the field a joy, we built in a poron technical foam layer between the molded sole and the vamps. This shock absorbing layer softens up the walk considerably, a feature you will enjoy at the end of a long day. The South 40 also has an oak-leather heel counter, which locks your foot in place to help prevent against rolling an ankle. Underfoot, we fitted the South 40 with a low profile Vibram 360 Force sole that provides better balance, stability and ground feel.
