The Boot
Made from the original Russell Bird Shooter patterns, the Backcountry's lineage is that of the most accomplished boot in American history. Wiley Post became the first person to fly to the stratosphere in a pair and Earl Shaffer wore his for over 2000 miles, becoming the first man to complete the Appalachian Trail. Both of these pairs are now housed by the Smithsonian Museum.
Lightweight, highly water resistant, and extremely durable, the Backcountry is the boot we recommend as a customer's first pair. If you want a pair of Russells that can be worn from sea to summit in incredible comfort, the Backcountry is your boot.

The Construction
The Backcountry is made with our famous Double Vamp Moccasin construction. You can learn more about this unique two-layer moccasin construction on our Process page. The Backcountry is 7" tall with Army Studs and a pull loop.

This boot is a Premier Build, meaning that upon your order it will be put into production on a 12-16 week lead time.
Sizing Confidence: By ordering this boot you understand that if the fit is too large or small, you can exchange it within 30 days of delivery in unworn condition and we will put another pair into production for you in an adjusted size of your choice. Exchanges are limited to 1 per order and the production timeline for the second pair will be 12-16 weeks. Premier Builds are non-refundable. Used the sizing app, was a half size down from my “normal” size, and fits like a glove after a few days of wear. I found them to be more comfortable without the insole they ship with. Worth the 12 week wait it took for mine.

My new Backcountry boots fit great thanks to the on-line sizing app. I bought a smaller size than I normally do and they fit perfectly. The boots are beautiful and I am proud to wear them.
Boots arrived in 2 months and look stunning. For UK customers, the sizes on the website are US sizes which are bigger (US 10 = UK 9) so if you order your normal uk size its naturally a size down and likely to fit perfectly. I used the AI tool and it came up with my normal UK size and they fit perfectly on arrival, like slippers. Super soft leather, took a couple of days to break in but now feel very comfortable. I'm in Scotland and they've passed the wet weather test. Don't hesitate!
