In Afrikaans, Veldskoen means “field shoe” and it has been the work shoe of choice for hundreds of years in South Africa and Namibia. In form, Veldskoen have remained fairly simple. It is a lace-up chukka with an unstructured leather upper. The upper is stitched down to a mid-sole, which is then attached to a tread-less rubber sole.
Because of the rich history of Russells being used on safari by both professional guides and sportsmen, creating a Russell "Vellie" seemed like a necessary tribute to this wild continent. Blending the functional chukka form and the durability of true moccasin construction, this shoe is just out-there enough to work with any outfit. Wearing shorts? That's how they wear Vellies in Africa. Wearing chinos, khakis, or jeans? The true moccasin construction is a classic look under pants. Made in smaller sizes for ladies as well, this boot is a comfortable, flattering design that is extremely versatile.
The sole is a 100% natural crepe rubber made by hand in France by Lactae Havea. The material’s inherent softness makes each step a joy, and is significantly lighter than synthetic rubber soles. The leather of choice for this boot is our Rust Horween Roughout, which is both incredibly durable, yet soft enough to feel like a glove. Whenever you pack your bag for a trip, you will find yourself making room for your Vellies. (Pronounced "Fellies")
