An excellent boot for warm weather situations in any country, the PH is the go-to boot for professional hunters and guides. Configured as a lightweight Single Vamp moccasin with a Molded Sole, the PH provides excellent footing for a wide variety of terrains. Our versatile full-grain Weathered Oak Timberjack leather is paired with tan Scottish twill quarters, making an extremely tough and breathable boot. This newest version features an upgraded Vibram 360 outsole with a 3/8"heel wedge. This combination provides long wear life while maintaining flexibility and stealth. Apart from the more aggressive sole, the primary difference between the Safari and the PH is the Molded Sole, which provides side-to-side support. 7" high
I just bought a pair of the Professional Hunter and was so impressed that I decided to buy the Weathered Oak PH Boots. If you are holding back and unsure of getting these boots, let me tell you stop thinking and start buying. These boots feel like clouds on my feet. I'm already saving up for the Pecos Boots as my next purchase. Great Company, Great Boots, and Great Service. These are American made top of the line boots. I promise you will pat yourself on the back for buying these amazing boots.
Decided to buy these boots for hiking and they're very comfortable for both uphill and downhill climbing. They're definitely not suited for wet/muddy hikes, but they're ok with mildly wet terrain. I took these boots out on a very steep/muddy beach hike, and they definitely fail that test. I kept slipping and falling, even though they're not advertise for these terrains I wanted to push these boots. After a total of 3 easy hikes, I noticed the brass eyelets where cutting into the tongue leather, the brass eyelets have burr on them and the quilt has a lot of loose ends on the inside of the boots. To mitigate the eyelet issue, I bought some tongue savers, hopefully the eyelets cut into the savers and not the tongue's leather. I wish I could upload images but this review will do. I haul a lot of camera equipment with me on tough terrain and I dare to say that I did not feel confident in these boots. They're comfortable and the fit is perfect, I wear the same size for every shoe I buy and these boots fit perfectly regardless of Russell recommending to go a size smaller. I will keep pushing these boots and hopefully I gain some confidence. I have own the same pair of hiking boots from a different competitor, traversed many miles on different terrains with equipment and having total confidence on not slipping, tripping, rolling ankles, climbing steep 45-70 degree climbs, so I'm hoping with time I can feel the same way on my Russells.
I wonder if anyone else has had these issues.
Edgar, I think there is some confusion here as to the purpose of the PH boot. It is absolutely not a boot for wet or steep conditions as the product description clearly states. This is a trekking boot designed for the plains of Africa where breathability, durability, and comfort for stalking long distances in the bush is key. Steep and muddy is a perfect application for the Backcountry, but not the PH.
Super confortable
Without a doubt, Russell Moccasin Co. offers high quality American made boots. Yes, they’re expensive. But you get what you pay for. I have several pair of these boots and have been a customer for 25 years. I recently purchased a new pair of Weathered Oak PH boots with the new “360” sole. What a disappointment. These soles are flat and flimsy. Reminds me of a pair of bowling shoes. Definitely a deal breaker for me. Im all for trying new things but it feels like I’m being force fed this new sole, like it or not. It appears that, all but one of the new leather choices in the PH are offered with this sole exclusively. After receiving my new boots and giving the “360” soles a try, I promptly boxed them up and sent them to Appleton Cobbler Shop to have the soles replaced with the Aspen Gumlite. It’s good to offer new options, but I think it’s a mistake to abandon the tried and true components that established Russell as a premier brand in professional footwear.
It’s not my intention to de suede anyone from buying these boots. I’m merely trying keep the spirit the “original” company alive so those who share my sentiments can enjoy Russell boots for years to come.
Thank You.
Hi Jim,
Thanks for your input. Just to be clear the Vibram 360 sole has been used at Russell for well over a decade in many of our models including the PH.
